Review: Eco Nappy Solutions Charcoal Bamboo Pocket Diaper

Description: The Eco Nappy Solutions Charcoal Bamboo pocket diaper consists of a waterproof PUL outer and microfleece bamboo inner with a five layer charcoal bamboo insert.  The diaper has a pocket opening at the back to stuff the insert into and features a snap-down rise with three different size settings. The diaper fastens around the waist with snap closures and includes a hip snap on each tab to combat wing droopage. It also has cross-over snaps in order to make the waist even smaller for younger babies.

First impressions: On the outside, these look very similar to other pockets available locally, however once you open the diaper up, the soft fleece-y bamboo charcoal interior lining is immediately noticeable. The insert is also thicker than the regular microfibre insert that other pockets come with (which make sense since this insert has five layers). It is made of the same charcoal bamboo fleece found in the interior lining.  [Rating: 3.5/5]

Ease of use: These are fairly easy to use - simply stuff the insert into the pocket opening and fasten on baby. It has three snaps to fasten on each tab - two waist snaps and one hip snap, which could confuse those new to cloth (our daycare usually just fastens one snap), however it won't affect function if you just fasten one snap on each side. You might just end up with wing droop.  When you remove the diaper, simply take the insert out and place everything in your diaper pail. As is the case with other synthetic pockets and inserts, these dry pretty fast, which is awesome for rainy winters. I find it really easy to spray poop off of these diapers - the fleece interior doesn't hold onto solids like some other fabrics have a tendency to. And you don't need to worry about stains, since the interior lining and insert is grey. [Rating: 4.5/5]

Fit:  I found the fit of these pockets to be average on J. They do seem to run slightly bigger than other pocket diapers and at 9 months and almost 9kg he is still on the smallest rise setting with two snaps exposed at the waist and one on each hip. This diaper comes up slightly higher in the waist than some others I've tried, so could be a good option for long waisted babies/toddlers. The extra two layers in the insert (vs the run-of-the-mill standard 3-layer microfibre insert) doesn't add much extra bulk in the diaper, which I appreciate. [Rating: 3.5/5]

Value for money:  These are very affordable and IMO good value for money, especially given the great quality insert and the fact that these diapers are so easy to use in terms of poop clean-up and stain resistance. [Rating: 4/5]

Performance: These work well for J during the day, and it could actually handle a lot more urine volume than he is able to generate. I just typically change after two or three hours though, but I think on him they could easily last 4 - 5 hours, though I wouldn't leave them on that long. I consider J to be a light-medium wetter during the day. I didn't try them for overnight, but I doubt they would work for him as is, given he is a medium-heavy wetter at night and outpees all other pockets. J's poop is still fairly runny, even though he is no longer exclusively breastfed, and these diapers contain it very well. We have had no leakage issues at all. [Rating: 4/5]

Overall impression: These are a little nicer than your average pocket diaper - the charcoal bamboo fleece inner and thick, fluffy absorbent insert just takes it up that extra notch.  They fit well, are easy to use and take care of and do a pretty decent job at absorbing liquids and keeping everything contained. I think they would make a great addition to any stash and as an added bonus, they come in some pretty prints.
