Review: WeeGro AI2

Description: The WeeGro AI2 system can be used either as a shell with snap-in insert or simply as cover over a variety of absorbent diapers - flats, prefolds or fitteds. The cover is made of a single layer of PUL with a wipeable interior and an extra layer of PUL at the back to prevent wicking at the embroidery site. It features white trim around the edges and double gussets around the legs. The WeeGro cover is one-size-fits-most and has three rows of rise snaps on the front as well as two rows of waist snaps to adjust the fit as your baby grows. On the inside front there are two snaps for snapping in your insert. This is covered by a flap which enables you to simply tuck an insert too. The insert is made of three-layers of microfibre (similar to most pocket diaper brand inserts) and comes with a micro-suede sleeve with two snaps on one end to snap into the cover. The insert is designed to be inserted into the sleeve which is then snapped into the cover.

First impressions: This affordable cover comes in a range of bright prints with cute animal designs embroidered onto the back, which makes for super cute OTB shots. At first glance the flap at the back which covers the embroidery seems a bit confusing - like you would place the insert underneath it. In fact, the insert lays on top of it and the extra layer simply provides extra leak protection. The PUL is super stretchy and the trim around the edges and on the double gussets seem nice and soft, reminiscent of the Blueberry trim.  The cover seems generously sized with an average to wide crotch.  [Rating: 3.5/5]

Ease of use: As mentioned, the interior flap at the back can be a little confusing at first. It is overall fairly easy to use, though the AI2 system has the extra step of inserting the microfibre insert into the microsuede sleeve before snapping it into the cover on the front inside. Even though it only snaps in the front I did not have issues with the insert moving around even on my wrigglier-by-the-day toddler. I suspect this is because it has two snaps in front to hold it in place vs the one snap on other AI2 systems. When the insert is wet, simply unsnap and replace with another insert. You can also use this cover over trifolded/padfolded or snappi'd prefolds and flats or fitteds. In between uses I like to wipe the interior and air out the cover. When the cover is soiled, simply place in your nappy bucket, ready for wash day. I have had no hassles with washing these and they dry pretty fast. This makes them ideal for hand washing too. The fact that the extra layer of PUL in the back isn't sewn down around all the edges can make poop cleanup a little trickier if you're using a diaper sprayer. [Rating: 3.5/5]

Fit: The stretchy PUL makes it easy to get a good fit with these covers. As an AI2 system I prefer a slightly trimmer fit, but as a cover over snappi'd prefolds, flats and fitteds, I absolutely love the fit. They even work over bulky night time fitteds, with room to grow. At 13 months and 9.5kg J is still on the smallest rise setting when used as an AI2, with one row of waist snaps showing. We move up to the second row of rise snaps and two rows of snaps showing at the waist when using the cover over night time diapers. I really like how gentle the leg elastics are on these covers - it never leaves red marks. In that sense it's ideal for night time use and should work well on chubbier thighed babies and toddlers too. [Rating: 4/5]

Value for money: WeeGro shells are great value for money, whether you use them as an AI2 system or simply as cover. Something to bear in mind is that the covers aren't compatible with other snap-in inserts, due to the snap configuration. However, you could simply tuck any other insert or trifolded prefold underneath the flap in front and still be able to use it as AI2. I like that the shells are versatile and fit well over a variety of absorbent inners. [Rating: 5/5]

Performance: This cover does exactly what it's supposed to do - keeps moisture and solids inside. We have used it during the day and at night and have not had any leakage or poop spills. The microsuede sleeve that comes with the insert is a nice touch as it allows you to repurpose all your old microfibre inserts by simply inserting them into the sleeve to be used as an AI2 insert.  It also has the added bonus of providing a stay-dry feel, which is ideal for those babies who are sensitive to wetness. You could even stuff a prefold or flat inside the sleeve for added absorbency, but still retaining the stay-dry feel and stain-repellant benefits of the microsuede fabric and of course the ease of snapping an insert in. [Rating: 5/5]

Overall impression: I love the cute applique on the back, the soft and stretchy PUL and gentle leg elastics. I like the versatility of this cover and how it fits well even over night time fitteds. Good quality, great price and versatile - great buy all round.

    1. Yes, with an AI2 diaper you can re-use the cover a few times before washing, just replacing the inserts. A very economical way to diaper. :-)

  2. I dont know if its just because I have a boy - but these covers always get wee on them after one use so I end up having to change the cover every time as well as the inner. I keep wondering is this just me? Also the runny poos do leak out of these. my baby is 4 months, fairly chubby thighs. I just can't seem to get a close (yet not so close it leaves indentations) fit. Any suggestions?

    1. What are you using inside as the absorbent part? How often are you changing? If you have a heavy wetter, you might need to add more absorbency or change sooner to avoid getting pee on the cover. Are you putting the nappy on correctly? This video might help with fit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=youtu.be&v=C5EtTYQJWAU&app=desktop
