Review: Bam+Boo Sleeve Nappy

Description: The Bam+Boo Sleeve Nappy consists of a waterproof PUL outer and microsuede inner with a big and small insert made of two layers microfibre sandwiched between two layers of bamboo for four total layers of absorbency. The diaper has a sleeve style pocket which means it is open at both the front and back with a snap in front that allows you to snap the insert in. This diaper has an interior double gusset (similar to Rumparooz and THX) to keep runny poop contained. They feature a snap-down rise with four different size settings as well as three snaps on each wing (one of them a hip snap) to fasten the diaper around the waist. It also features cross-over snaps on the waist tabs to accommodate smaller waists.

First impressions: The colour coordinating snaps and contrasting solid colour waist tabs gives a really nice appearance to this pocket diaper. It has four rise settings instead of the usual three, which means it should fit a wider variety of sizes. The two inserts seem like they would be quite absorbent and is definitely a step up absorbency-wise from the regular microfibre inserts that usually come with pocket diapers. The diaper is available in a variety of nice bright prints - the circus and leaf prints are particularly eye catching. [Rating: 4/5]

Ease of use: The sleeve-style pocket (ie open on both sides) make these easier to stuff compared to a regular pocket. The pocket opening is also fairly generous which makes easy to add extra inserts as well. The insert snaps in at the front to make it a little more secure and the large insert has an extra snap on top which enables you to snap the smaller insert onto it.  You could also choose to lay the insert(s) on top of the pocket lining if you prefer natural fibres against your baby's bum. Once the diaper is stuffed/insert snapped in, it goes on just like an AIO. When you change the nappy you can simply take it off and place in your dry bucket as is - no need to remove the inserts, it will agitate out in the wash. Leaving it snapped in makes it easy to assemble again once it's washed too - no hunting for the matching insert, it's already there and just needs to be stuffed/laid in the pocket shell. Drying time is average - the pocket shell dries fast, but the insert takes a little longer to dry than regular microfibre inserts, due to the added bamboo layers. [Rating: 4/5]

Fit: J is on the second smallest rise setting in this diaper with two columns of snaps exposed at the waist, so there is still quite a bit of room to grow in this diaper. We get a good fit around the legs and waist. We use one insert during the day and it's slightly bulkier than our other pockets, but not by much. Using both inserts obviously adds to the bulk. The diaper is roomy enough at the back to accommodate extra inserts.  [Rating: 3.5/5]

Value for money: These are fair value for money in my opinion, especially given the adjustability in size, bamboo used in the inserts and the fact that you get two inserts. [Rating: 4/5]

Performance: We use this diaper with the large insert during the day and it easily lasts two hours on J, who has recently upped his output during the daytime hours and is now a light to medium wetter. While J has not yet reached maximum absorbency of the single insert I suspect most toddlers his age would need the second insert during the day as well. This diaper also does a good job containing poop and the interior double gusset should work well with ebf poop too. I did try this diaper for overnight using both inserts as well as the Bam+Boo ultra night booster, however we still had some wicking around the legs. I consider J to be a medium to heavy wetter at night and he started outpeeing pockets at night at around four months old though. [Rating: 4/5]

Overall impression: I like the bold prints, colour coordinating tabs and snaps of the Bam+Boo Sleeve Nappy. The fact that it comes with two inserts, which are a synthetic/natural blend as well as the four rise settings give it that extra edge over other pockets. The price is reasonable and these would make a good stash filler.
