Description: The Bush Bums Baobab Hybrid Fitted is the premium offering from this WAHM and features only organic cotton against baby's skin. It consists of a printed outer layer of organic cotton jersey, a hidden layer of fleece, hidden layer of hemp and an interior lining of organic cotton jersey. Each fitted comes with two lay-in inserts consisting of a mixture of organic cotton and hemp. The diaper features a 3 x 3 snap-down rise which enables you to adjust the fit to your baby and it fastens with snaps around the waist. There are two snaps on each wing as well as two crossover snap settings to make the waist smaller for a younger baby.
First impressions: I love the squishy feel of this fitted and the diaper seems neatly made with even stiching and snap placements. I love the South African flavour of the prints that this WAHM offers, it makes them stand out from the WAHM crowd. The branding and label is really cute too! [Rating: 4/5]
Ease of use: These are fairly simple to use - simply snap the rise to the correct setting, lay in your inserts and put the diaper on your baby. As it is, this diaper is semi-waterproof, but for extended wear you would need to add a cover, making it a two part diapering system. If you are used to pockets you will find the sizing on this diaper very easy to use, as it has the same snap-down rise settings as most pockets do. The inserts also fit into the diaper as is, no need to fold anything down, again making it very user friendly for those new to fitteds. When taking the diaper off, you can simply pop the entire thing into your diaper pail, no need to unsnap or unstuff anything. Drying time is average compared to other fitteds and hybrid fitteds. Fit: We were able to get a good fit with this diaper on J, with a nice seal around the legs. We had a little bit of gaping at the waist when he stands, but it doesn't really bother me and doesn't affect function for us. I will say that I do prefer a fold-down rise on fitteds as the snap-down creates extra bulk at the front which I'm not too fond of. I also feel that the fit would be slightly better on chunkier-legged babies. In terms of overall bulkiness, Bush Bums is on par with other hybrid fitteds, ie on the bulkier side. At 18 months old and almost 11kg, J is on the middle rise setting with the waist tabs touching at the centre (no snaps showing). The cotton jersey fabric is nice and stretchy which definitely makes it easier to get a good fit, especially when your baby is in between snap settings. [Rating: 3.5/5]
Value for money: The pricing is very fair and reasonable in my opinion considering fabrics used (all organic) and the fact that it is a WAHM made diaper. It is on the lower end of the price range for high-end WAHM diapers. It is however less absorbent than other WAHM hybrid fitteds I've tried though, so that's something to bear in mind. [Rating: 4/5]
Performance: We tried this diaper during the day and for overnight use*. J has recently increased his output during the day, though I would still consider him to be on the lighter wetting side. At the two hour mark this diaper starts to get a little damp on the outside at the legs, but we have not had any leaks with it. At night we have had one or two successful nights using the diaper as is, however I usually boost it to last the whole night. J is currently a medium wetter at night. As is typical with cotton knits, the fabric has started to pill slightly after a few washes, but so far no fading or any other issues. Drying time of the shell is on par with other hybrid fitteds, the inserts seem to dry slighly faster than other natural fibre inserts I have though. [Rating: 3.5/5]
* As is, this fitted is intended for day use, as per the creator of Bush Bums
Overall impression: I love the unique prints that Bush Bums has and the organic fabrics used. Absorbency-wise it is on the lower end of the scale in comparison to other WAHM hybrids I've tried, however the price point is a definite plus and will make this diaper attractive to those new to WAHM diapers. If you prefer using organic fabrics on your baby, then this diaper should definitely be on your to-try list.
