{Newborn fluff} Review: Rumparooz Preemie/Newborn Cover

Description: The Rumparooz preemie/newborn cover is the newborn version of their one-size cover. It is a cover and can be used over any prefold, flat, fitted or insert of your choice. The Rumparooz preemie/newborn cover is made from a single layer of PUL and features double leg gussets. It comes in either snaps or Velcro closures. The snap option features two snaps on each tab to adjust both waist and hip size and features a little dip in the front to accomodate the umbilical cord. The Velcro option comes with laundry tabs. This cover has three rows of snaps on the front to adjust the rise. For purposes of this review, I tested the snap closure version.

First impressions: First things first - this print is just the best! Rumparooz has a range of super adorable prints (hello Bonnie & Clyde) and lovely bright solids which makes it hard to choose just one. This cover can size down really small - I can see why  it's labeled as suitable for preemies too. The PUL is thicker than most and seems very durable without being stiff. I like the squared off tabs at the front, makes for a nice crisp look and makes it stand out between all the other diapers with rounded tabs. The colour coordinating binding around the edges finishes the diaper off nicely and gives it a polished look. [Rating: 4.5/5]

Ease of use: These are quite straightforward to use - simply adjust the rise snaps to the correct setting for your baby (typically you'll start out at the lowest settings and work your way up as baby grows) and then fasten over the prefold/flat your baby is wearing underneath. The fact that there are two snaps to fasten on each tab means it takes a few extra seconds to put on vs only one snap or velcro. If the cover isn't soiled, you can simply wipe the interior and leave it to air out and reuse at the next diaper change. The Rumparooz preemie/newborn cover is easy to wash and like most covers, they dry pretty quickly [Rating: 4/5]

Fit: These fit J from the beginning on the smallest rise and waist settings (we started using cloth at 1.5 weeks, weighing 2.2kg) and he could fit in these on the biggest rise setting until around 15 weeks or 6.5 kgs.  They are rated to fit from 1.8kg (4 lbs) to 6.8kg (15lbs), and I would say they run pretty true to size. Of the newborn covers with adjustable rises, J outgrew these first. These covers fit fairly snugly, so I found they were better suited to prefolds and flats instead of fitteds. The leg openings get quite small, so they fit snugly around J's little chicken legs right from the start. The leg and back elastics are quite tight and stiff and tended to leave marks, so I did worry about how comfortable that is on delicate newborn skin, though J never let on that it bothered him. [Rating: 4/5]

Value for money: These are very well priced and I do think they are excellent value for money especially if your babies tend to be on the smaller side.  After three months of use they still look brand new, with no signs of wear and tear. They are very popular covers for newborns and hold their value quite well in terms of reselling. [Rating: 5/5]

Performance: This cover kept absolutely everything inside - the snug elastics made sure of that. Obviously you need to use an absorbent enough diaper underneath the cover, but provided you have that, this cover will not let you down.

Overall impression: I really liked the Rumparooz Preemie/Newborn cover and found myself reaching for it a lot in the first month or two when J was still very small. I will say that I preferred the fit on the smallest and middle rise settings; when J got big enough for the biggest rise setting I found other covers to fit better at that stage. The cover works best over trim diapers eg small prefolds and flats. If your babies tend to be on the larger side or you are looking for a cover to use over fitteds, this will probably not be the cover for you. However if you tend to have small babies, you will love the fit of this cover.

At the time that these photos were taken, J was between 4 and 14 weeks old and his weight ranged between 2.6kg and 6.3kg.
